VIAJES 2004 - ISRAEL Y PALESTINA

Place of pilgrimage: from the long list of Kings, David is the King that behaves with humility, "according to the heart of God". According to the tradition, David died during Shavuot, the celebration of crops, and was buried in this place of Mount Zion, now a pilgrimage site. A quilt richly decorated with symbols and Hebrew writing covers the place

SINAGOGA, JERUSALEM:

SYNAGOGUE, JERUSALEM

Nowadays, in synagogues there are three daily prayers: Shajarit which is said in the morning and Minjá and Maariv that are said before and after the sunset. The rabbis read the Torah and direct religious services, preach, and act as spiritual leaders. Swinging, they bend back and forward "to focus in the praying with body, mind and spirit ".

HAIFA, cave of the Prophet ELIJAH

A few kilometers from the Centre of the city of Haifa, raises the promontory of Mount Carmel, a limestone rock beaten by the Mediterranean waves. It is full of caves and is covered with rich vegetation thanks to the sea mist, so it is called "Garden Land ". In this place sheltered Prophet Elias when he was persecuted and also here the Holy Family rested when returning from Egypt.

RAMALLAH, PALESTINA

RAMALLAH, Palestinian

Vista of Mukata, (which in Arabic means "District") headquarters of the Palestinian Authority since 1994. Here spent his last years, and was buried Yasser Arafat. Israeli artillery and tanks multiple attacks have left the building almost destroyed. Ariel Sharon's government warlike spirit and patronizing attitude are clearly visible here. In 2001 the building was attacked bombarded, besieged for several weeks and razed to the ground with mechanical diggers and armored vehicles.

JERUSALEM: wall of the LAMENTATIONS

constitute the most sacred place for Judaism. It is regarded as the only remnant of the Second Temple. Preaches and individual petitions are placed daily between the stones of the wall, for "God eyes only". The place, especially visited on Saturdays when Jews come to pray and cry, is separated in two places: the left side for men and the right side for women. Jewish religion is inherited from mother by birth, is the reason why Judaism is not a proselytizing religion. That blood bond explains why this people are more than joined by a common belief.

ABU DIS, JERUSALEM:

Here is the Third Station, where Jesus fell for the first time.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre , JERUSALEM:

ABU DIS, JERUSALEM:

in that same site, this woman gesticulates: "The few rights that we have are being overwhelmed." We are prisoners; we cannot move, we cannot go to work, says and adds "even children can not go to schools on the other side". "We are being killed with bullets and by silences"

the tomb of Lazarus; located in Bethany, is occupied by a mosque, which can be seen in the foreground. At the rear it can be seen the church built by the Holy Land Custody, covering the remains of ancient basilicas adjacent to the Tomb.

ISRAEL - PALESTINA:

ISRAEL -PALESTINE

Palestine and Israel are located in the Centre of the geotheology of the globe, in Asia, although in that place Africa, Asia and Europe meet. Despise the total of its territory is hardly bigger than the smallest province in Argentina, Tucumán, that tiny territory treasures an enormous part of the history of mankind. In the land of Jews, Christians and Muslims, Jerusalem becomes a place of pilgrimage, worship and withdrawal for all of them. David, Jesus and Mohammad walked along that very same place.
However, traveling along - independently - by Israel and Palestine (the occupied territories of Cisjordan), is nowadays a mayor challenge, due to the volatile situation in the region. The embryonic civil war which erupted from the so-called second Intifada (September 2000) has reduced the freedom of movement of the population. The building of the separation fence between the two has only heated up spirits, and, although condemned by the international community, it is still under construction, thus creating a new apartheid.
This way, the access to sites considered sacred by the religions of the Book is being restricted. All this has caused a considerable decline of tourism, with disastrous consequences for the economy of the area.
In my personal opinion, peace will only be possible when dialogue and justice are restored for all. Meanwhile, visit the Holy Land will continue to be a painful experience, one of the many points of disagreement of the human family.

Paul Sigismondi

Carlos

Following World War II, the British withdrew from their mandate of Palestine, and the UN partitioned the area into Arab and Jewish states, an arrangement rejected by the Arabs. Subsequently, the Israelis defeated the Arabs in a series of wars without ending the deep tensions between the two sides. The territories occupied by Israel since the 1967 war are not included in the Israel country profile, unless otherwise noted. On 25 April 1982, Israel withdrew from the Sinai pursuant to the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty. Outstanding territorial and other disputes with Jordan were resolved in the 26 October 1994 Israel-Jordan Treaty of Peace. In addition, on 25 May 2000, Israel withdrew unilaterally from southern Lebanon, which it had occupied since 1982. In keeping with the framework established at the Madrid Conference in October 1991, bilateral negotiations were conducted between Israel and Palestinian representatives (from the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip) and Syria to achieve a permanent settlement. On 24 June 2002, US President Bush laid out a "road map" for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which envisions a two-state solution. However, progress toward a permanent status agreement has been undermined by Palestinian-Israeli violence ongoing since September 2000.
