VIAJES
2004 - SIRIA
2004
TRIPS- SYRIA
|
Apenas
a Siria.
As
soon as I finished my trip through Lebanon, I headed to
Syria. It is difficult to express the sensations experienced
in that country with equanimity, as from this land come
half of my genes, and I get a deep pleasure and a not hidden
pride out of that. Any appreciation can be labeled of subjective,
and that will be probably right.

APAMEA:
Conjunto de ruinas que
contienen arquitectura griega, romana, bizantina y árabe.
APAMEA:
It is
a group of ruins that contain Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and
Arabic architecture. I walked astonished along the 1800
m of the street known as Cardo Maximus, among its 105 columns
57 m tall. At the time of its greatest splendor, the city
came to 120,000 inhabitants. It is situated 55 kilometers
north of the city of Hama.

SERJILLA:
Bizantina, abandonadas intactas. Pese a lo desoladas que
se ven, algunas construcciones se encuentran habitadas.
SERJILLA:
It
is one of the most interesting of the so-called "dead
cities" (which also include Bara and Ruweiha). Rises
in a Valley open southward, half way the Aleppo-Hama axis.
It is formed by a group of houses, churches, tombs and
sarcophagi from the Byzantine era, abandoned intact. As
desolate as they may look, some constructions are inhabited.

PALMIRA: Conocida
fronteriza.
PALMIRA:
Known as Tadmur (city of the dates) in Arabic, it is one
of the greatest cities of the Ancient World. Thanks to water
springing in the nearby, it began to grow with caravans
which stopped to rest. It reached its maximum splendor under
the reign of Zenobia, in the 270 dC. Then Aurelian razed
the city and turned it into border fortification.

PALMIRA;
valley of the Tombs:
The prosperity
of the place at the time of the routes of caravans is reflected
in the funerary art. To the Northwest of the ruins the place
is full of tombs, forming a necropolis. Among them there
are some shaped towers, richly decorated. They seem to emerge
from the dessert sands in the middle of nowhere.

Apenas empezado a
Nevertheless,
travelers who had visited this part of the world can corroborate
-as I do- that Siria is one of the most interesting destinations
in the
planet. Historically, archeologically and culturally speaking,
Siria contains a quantity and variety so amazing of places-ranging
from Bronze Era to empires, civilizations and even the beginning
of Christianity itself- that the visit turns into a trip
through time and imagination. Barely discovered by travelers,
its people make a cult out of hospitality hard to find somewhere
else and even harder to forget. I any place one can feel
safe and comfortable, as at home, even if one does not understand
a word in arabic or share ideology or traditions. And one
also feels that sirian people still belong to history, to
their traditions and to their culture, and that in the country,
so far, there is not so much deceiving colonization.

MARI (TELL HARIRI):
A 15 kilómetros
arcilla y adobe. Sin embargo, aquí se encuentra
uno de los sitios arqueológicos más antiguos
del mundo, remontándose a la Civilización
Mesopotámica. En las planicies de alrededor se
desarrolló la agricultura. Los productos eran comercializados
a través del río.
MARI
(TELL HARIRI)
15
km from Irak border, on Eufrates River right margin, it
can hardly be seen the clay and sun-dried bricks. Nevertheless,
here there is one of the oldest archeological sites in
the world, going back in time to Mesopotamian civilization.
In the surrounding plain, people practised agriculture.
The products were traded using the river.

AIN DIWAR:
AIN
DIWAR:
Very
close to the River Tigris in the eastern end of the country,
where it converge the borders of Syria, Turkey and Iraq,it
is the region known as Al Jazirah ("the island").
It is a prosperous area, featuring the best agricultural
land in the country. Abundant oil resources have recently
been discovered. Its inhabitants live out of transhumant
livestock.
|
Syrian
Kurdistan covers a vast region in the North-East of the
country, between the river Euphrates and Tigris, where
the Kurds represent the majority of the population. They
speak an Indian Arian language, different from the Arabic.
The family that hosted me lives out cotton crop and livestock
farming. The father has two wives, counting 12 children
born to the family.

|
|
MALKIYEH:
Kurdistan
extends along a wide geographical region covering northeastern
Syria, much of Turkey, Northern Iraq, Northwest of Iran
and reaches to the gates of the former Soviet Union. Consists
of mountains and plateaus where Tigris and Euphrates rivers
are born and hosts the biggest ethnos worldwide which hasn't
got a state of its own.
|
HALABIYEH:
Imperio Romano. Sobre una colina se levantaba el fuerte
y desde ahí se desprendían dos magníficas
murallas hasta las márgenes del río Éufrates,
llamadas murallas de Justiniano. Se ubican al norte de
Deir es Zor.
HALABIYEH
It
was one of the most formidable Byzantine fortifications
of the country, built by Justinian to protect the eastern
border of the Roman Empire. On a hill it was the Fort
and from there it raised two magnificent walls reaching
the banks of the Euphrates River, called Justinian walls.
They are located north of Deir is Zor.

|
Siria
demográfico, uno de los más altos del mundo;
Syrian
goes from the Mediterranean Sea to Fertile Growth in the
Euphrates Valley. It is surprising to discover the extension
of crops on lands that are being gained to the dessert using
irrigation. They produce food not only enough to meet the
needs of the growing population - calculated at 18 million
inhabitants-but also let them export surpluses.
Today's
challenges are to low population growth, one of the highest
in the world; democratize the institutions in the hands
of the mighty Baath Party; retrieve the plateau of the Golan
and achieve peace with Israel; recognize the independence
of Lebanon and withdraw its troops from that country. However,
the most important challenge Syrian people faces is the
ominous shadow of United States, threatening to take possession
of the region and which has also put Syria in its blacklist.

MESETA BISHRI:
BISHRI
PLATEAU:
Nomadic
tribes stroll around much of the Syrian territory, looking
for fresh pasture for their flocks. During the winter, the
rainy season, they move to the extensive plateaus that gain
temporary greenery and erect tents made of woven camel wool,
their most important animal. They will be living there for
a couple of months until the arrival of the summer.
|
a pastar.
AR
RASAFEH:
Despite
the place was already important since ancient times, the
ruins you find today date from the Byzantine period, when
San Diego worship grew important. In the middle of the
city, which occupied a 550 rectangle by 400 meters, was
the Basilica dedicated to the Saint. Today the inhabitants
of the place carried there his sheep to graze.

PALMIRA:
desierto.
PALMIRA:
View
of the city of Palmyra and its oasis from the top of Qalaat
Ibn Maan fortress. Half way between the Mediterranean and
the Euphrates River, water arises in the date area (in green,
at the back) coming from the mountains in the North and
West. With the sunset light painting them in orange, the
ruins seem suspended in the middle of the desert.

DAMASCO:
Mausoleo

hidden from them.

HOSN,

Ugarit, situada a

NABI
HURI, CYRRHUS:
It is
an archaeological site located close to the edge of the
border with Turkey and 75 kilometers from Aleppo. We walked
a lot with Steve looking for remnants left. A landscape
of gentle hills and olive trees surrounds the promontory,
where today it can hardly be recognized the ruins of a Roman
Theatre which measured 110 m in diameter, built in the second
century.
|
NABI HURI, CYRRHUS:
Puente construido

QUNEITRA:
Problems
of Arab countries with Israel led to the war of Six Days
(1967), culminating in the cease-fire called for by the
United Nations. In that ocasion Syria lost Mount Hermon
(Mount esh-Sheikh) and the plateau of the Golan, including
the city of Quneitra. During the war of Yom Kippur (1973),
the country could not recover such territories.
|
QUNEITRA:
QUNEITRA:
Since then the United Nations established a neutral zone
between the two countries, controlled by troops of the
blue helmets. But, before leaving Quneitra, Israel troops
destroyed the whole city total and deliberately, including
their churches and mosques, which were dynamited or demolished.
The 3740UN resolution condemned this fact. To visit the
place it is necessary to obtain a special permission.

DAMASCO, ZOCO AL
HAMADIYA:
DAMASCUS,
SOUK AL HAMADIYA:
In the
inside of this Souk or Mall, into the old town, is everything
that one can imagine. Sounds, colors and smells combine
in a chaos. Pedestrian areas are covered by very high metal
sheet ceilings which filter sunlight.

MAALOULA:
MAALOULA:
The
legend says that Santa Takla, disciple of St. Paul, was
sentenced to death when she declared herself Christian.
When fleeing from their Roman persecutors, God opened
a narrow corridor in the mountain where she was able to
escape and hide. The monastery which bears his name -
right - is located inside a cave and contains his grave
|

|
MAALOULA:
MAALOULA:
The village has the particularity that, Aramaic language,
the one used by Jesus in his preaches, is still spoken there..
In spite of being surrounded mainly by a Muslim population,
its inhabitants are predominantly Greek Catholics (of melquita
rite) and Orthodox. The centre is the Church of San Sarkis
and on the right side, the house of Zakie, my maternal grandmother.
|
MAALOULA:
Zakie
quedó huérfana a muy corta edad. No aprendió
Emigró a Argentina
MAALOULA:
Zakie
became orphan at very young age. She didn´t learn
to read or write and from very young should work hard to
live. "Could not open the door of the House in winter,
had a metre of snow" she used to tell us. She emigrated
to Argentina when still teenager, formed a very large family,
and could never return to their beloved land, that is why
I deposited a handful of this soil in his grave.

DAMASCO, MEZQUITA
ROUQAYYA:
DAMASCUS,
ROUQAYYA MOSQUE:
In the place where pilgrims kneel down and pray, is the
tomb of Hussein Imam sister. It was built by Iran and is
the most important centre of pilgrimage of the shiíta
Muslim minority. Their arches and mirror coated great onion-shaped
vault are the best example of the Persian art in the country.

QANAWAT:
QANAWAT:
At the south Syria dominates the black of the basalt,
from the extinct volcanoes of the so-called Druze mount
(for the Druze population living in the area). With that
the Roman Emperor material Philip, who was born here,
built palaces, theatres, Roman baths and these Corinthian
columns serving entry to their temples. To the back it
can be seen the snow capped Mount Hermon (Mount esh-Sheikh).
