del Africa oriental, lindante con Djibouti, Etiopía,
Kenia el Océano Indico y el golfo de Adén. Su
parte nordoriental tiene la forma de una extensa cuna que avanza
entre las aguas del océano índico y las del golfo
de Adén. La costa es rectilínea, escasa en accidentes,
y está formada por cadenas de dunas. Más al interior
el suelo se eleva hasta formar una meseta extremadamente árida.
El clima es seco, desértico en toda la región.
Sólo dos nos, el Juba y el Scebelli, llevan agua durante
todo el año. Sólo hay vegetación y arboleda
junto al cauce de los ríos. Son productos característicos
somalíes, el incienso, la mirra y la goma arábiga.
El ganado más numeroso es el lanar y el caprino, sin
olvidar los camellos. Muy difundidas la pesca del tiburón
y del atún. Industria modesta. El país exporta
ganado, bananas, pieles y cueros, pescado, carne. La mayor parte
de la población está compuesta por somalíes,
existiendo minorías bantúes y árabes. La
religión predominante es la musulmana sunnita.

is a republic of East Africa, bordering with Djibouti, Ethiopia,
Kenya, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden. Its North-Eastern
part, takes the form of an extensive cradle that moves between
the waters of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden. The coast
is rectilinear, low in accidents, and consists of strings of
dunes. Towards the interior of the country the soil rises to
form an extremely arid plateau. The climate is dry and desertic
throughout the region. Only two rivers, the Juba and the Scebelli,
carry water throughout the year. Vegetation and trees grow only
alongside the riverbeds.
Somali characteristic products are, incense, myrrh and Gum Arabic.
The largest cattle are sheep and goats, without forgetting the
camels. Shark and tuna fishing is very widespread. Industry
is very modest. The country exports cattle, bananas, skins,
fish, and meat. Most of the population is composed by Somalis,
Bantu and there are some Arab minorities. The predominant religion
is Sunni Muslim.
